Cattle ranch owners had difficulty in finding men to work their cattle so they hired boys who were more than willing to work for money. So that's how the word "COWBOYS" came about. Cowboys in those days were really "BOYS". When given time off they would go to town to buy supplies. This included smokes, beer and having sex with girls/women.
